Area of Science:

  • Neuro-oncology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Meningiomas are tumors arising from the meninges.
  • Malignant meningiomas are rare and aggressive variants.

Observation:

  • A 22-year-old male underwent resection of a left parieto-occipital convexity meningioma.
  • Multiple recurrences in various cranial locations were observed over 22 years.
  • Histological analysis consistently revealed malignant features including mitosis, hypercellularity, and necrosis.

Findings:

  • Despite multiple surgical resections and whole brain radiotherapy (56 Gy), the patient experienced progressive tumor recurrence.
  • The patient succumbed to the disease 24 years after initial diagnosis.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the aggressive nature and challenging management of malignant meningioma.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Early multimodal treatment combining radical surgery with aggressive radiotherapy and chemotherapy is crucial for improving outcomes in malignant meningioma.
