Combination Therapies and Personalized Medicine

Combining two or more treatment methods increases the life span of cancer patients while reducing damage to vital organs or tissue from the overuse of a single treatment. Combination therapy also targets different cancer-inducing pathways, thus reducing the chances of developing resistance to treatment.
The combination of the drug acetazolamide and sulforaphane is a good example of combination therapy to treat cancer. The cells in the interior of a large tumor often die due to the hypoxic and...

C4 Pathway and CAM

Most plants use the C3 pathway for carbon fixation. However, some plants, such as sugar cane, corn, and cacti that grow in hot conditions, use alternative pathways to fix carbon and conserve energy loss due to photorespiration. Photorespiration is the process that occurs when the oxygen concentration is high. Under such conditions, the rubisco enzyme in the Calvin cycle binds O2 instead of CO2, which halts photosynthesis and consumes energy.

The C4 pathway is used by plants such as...

Area of Science:

  • Integrative Medicine
  • Adolescent Health
  • Qualitative Research

Background:

  • Complementary/alternative medicine (CAM) use is prevalent among adolescents.
  • Understanding adolescent perceptions of CAM is crucial for healthcare providers.
  • Limited research exists on the factors influencing adolescent CAM decisions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore adolescents' perceptions of complementary/alternative medicine (CAM) use.
  • To identify factors influencing adolescents' decisions to use CAM.
  • To understand the barriers and benefits impacting CAM choices in adolescents.

Main Methods:

  • Qualitative study employing a grounded theory approach.
  • Semi-structured interviews conducted with adolescents attending a naturopathic college clinic.
  • Data analysis focused on identifying themes related to CAM decision-making.

Main Results:

  • Adolescents' CAM use is contextualized within their personal world and influencing factors.
  • Key influences include personality traits, culture, media, social contacts, and provider relationships.
  • Barriers and benefits significantly shape adolescents' evaluation of CAM choices.

Conclusions:

  • Practitioners should investigate barriers limiting adolescents' healthcare choices.
  • Integrative healthcare models require defining expertise, skill sets, and scope of practice.
  • Understanding adolescent CAM perceptions is vital for effective healthcare planning.
