Double balloon enteroscopy (DBE) is a valuable diagnostic tool for small intestine issues, enabling immediate endoscopic therapy and reducing the need for surgery compared to other methods.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Diagnostics
  • Endoscopy

Context:

  • Double balloon enteroscopy (DBE) has been utilized in Germany for small intestine diagnostics for approximately four years.
  • This study retrospectively evaluated the utility of DBE in surgical practice from December 2004 to September 2006.

Purpose:

  • To assess the diagnostic and therapeutic value of double balloon enteroscopy (DBE) in surgical practice.
  • To compare the rate of surgical indications following DBE with existing literature.

Summary:

  • 106 DBE procedures were performed on 75 patients, with oral approach in 75 and anal in 31 cases, primarily for recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding.
  • Complete small intestine visualization was achieved in only 21.3% of cases, often requiring a combined approach. Pathologies were detected in 54.7%, including angiodysplasias and polyps, with successful endoscopic treatment in many instances.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Therapeutic interventions, including endoscopic and surgical procedures, were performed in 40% of patients. Surgical intervention was indicated in 8.0% of cases, lower than previously reported rates.
  • Impact:

    • DBE demonstrates high diagnostic accuracy for small intestine pathologies.
    • Immediate endoscopic therapeutic capabilities offer a significant advantage over traditional methods.
    • The study indicates a lower rate of surgical intervention (8.0%) following DBE compared to literature (up to 22%), highlighting its effectiveness in guiding treatment decisions.
