Background:

  • Struma ovarii is a rare germ cell tumor of the ovary containing thyroid tissue.
  • Accurate imaging is crucial for diagnosis and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize the computed tomographic (CT) findings of pathologically confirmed struma ovarii.
  • To identify key imaging features that aid in the diagnosis of struma ovarii on CT.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of CT scans from 13 patients with pathologically proven struma ovarii.
  • Consensus evaluation by two radiologists assessing tumor characteristics like size, configuration, margins, internal architecture, and enhancement patterns.

Main Results:

  • Mean tumor size was 11.4 cm; all tumors were unilateral with smooth margins.
  • Predominantly cystic or multicystic appearance (84.6%) with common precontrast high attenuation lesions (92.2-120.5 HU).
  • Cyst wall enhancement was absent (53.8%) or moderate (38.5%).

Conclusions:

  • CT findings suggestive of struma ovarii include a smooth-margined, multicystic mass with precontrast high attenuation.
  • Absence or moderate enhancement of the cyst wall is also characteristic.
  • These imaging features can help differentiate struma ovarii from other adnexal masses.
