[Lipid peroxidation and antioxidant systems in patients with HIV infection]
Aim:
To study lipid peroxidation (LPO) and anti-oxidant system (AOS) in patients with HIV infection.
Material And Methods:
Enzymatic parameters of AOS and LPO were studied in 108 patients with HIV infection, 38 of them had HIV+HBV, HIV+HCV infection and 17 patients had associated tuberculosis.
Results:
Severe alterations of LPO were found: a significant rise of LPO products, malonic dialdehyde and dienic conjugates. LPO intensity depends on the disease stage, concomitant illnesses and treatment. LPO intensification in HIV-infected patients is accompanied with inhibition of total anti-oxidant activity of blood, catalase and superoxide dismutase. Low level of the latter evidences for failure of AOS at different periods of the disease. High LPO activity in HIV-infected patients may be one of pathogenetic mechanisms of the disease development and necessitates corrective therapy.
Conclusion:
Assessment of LPO and AOS parameters can be used to control efficacy of the on-going treatment.

Oxidation of Phenols to Quinones
o-hydroxy phenols are oxidized to o-quinones and p-hydroxy phenols to p-quinones. Such redox reactions involve the transfer of two electrons and two protons. The reversible redox property is crucial in...
Pulmonary Tuberculosis I
Causative Organism
The primary infectious agent causing tuberculosis is Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a slow-growing, acid-fast, aerobic rod that exhibits sensitivity to heat and ultraviolet light. Instances of Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium avium contributing to the development of TB infection are rare.
