Background:

Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the effect of selective PAF antagonists on in vivo IgE antibody production.
- To assess the impact of these antagonists on PAF-induced vascular permeability.
Main Methods:
- Balb/c mice were immunized with ovalbumin and alum.
- Anti-ovalbumin IgE antibody levels were measured using passive cutaneous anaphylactic (PCA) reactions.
- Mice were treated with various PAF antagonists (BN 52021, BN 50730, WEB 2086, WEB 2170).
- PAF-induced vasopermeability was also assayed.
Main Results:
- PAF antagonists did not alter the level of anti-ovalbumin IgE antibodies in immunized mice (PCA titer remained 1/640).
- Specific PAF antagonists (BN 50730, WEB 2086, WEB 2170) significantly reduced PAF-induced vascular permeability.
- No significant effect on IgE production was observed.
Conclusions:
- PAF does not appear to play a significant role in the in vivo production of IgE antibodies in this experimental model.
