Screening cirrhotic patients for early hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) detection showed limited cost-effectiveness. While HCC was diagnosed in 13 patients, only 3 received curative treatment, highlighting challenges in improving patient outcomes through surveillance.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the outcomes and cost-effectiveness of a hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) screening program in patients with cirrhosis.
  • To determine the detection rate of HCC through regular screening.
  • To evaluate the feasibility of curative treatment for detected HCC cases.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective study involving 110 patients with cirrhosis.
  • Screening included abdominal ultrasound and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) level determination every 3 or 6 months.
  • Mean surveillance duration was 36 months.

Main Results:

  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was diagnosed in 13 out of 110 patients during the surveillance period.
  • Only 3 patients (1 hepatic resection, 2 alcohol ablation) received curative treatment.
