Cochrane reviews are underutilized in the US. A study found only 53% of Obstetrics & Gynecology expert articles cited relevant Cochrane reviews, indicating a missed opportunity to enhance evidence-based practice.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the extent to which Cochrane reviews were cited in the Clinical Expert Series of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Conclusions:

  • While about half of the articles cited relevant Cochrane reviews, a significant number of eligible reviews were not referenced.
  • Increased citation of Cochrane reviews could strengthen the scientific foundation of prominent medical series.
  • Strategies to improve access and awareness of Cochrane reviews in the US may be needed.
