Summary

Methylene blue dye can discolor certain intraocular lenses (IOLs), particularly Collamer types, after systemic use. Silicone IOLs showed variable staining, while PMMA and acrylic IOLs remained unstained.

  • A pseudophakic patient using Prosed/DS (methylene blue) presented with a discolored silicone intraocular lens (Tecnis Z9001).
  • This prompted an in vitro investigation into IOL staining with methylene blue.

Findings:

  • Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and hydrophobic acrylic IOLs showed no staining.
  • Silicone IOLs exhibited variable staining.
  • Collamer IOLs demonstrated intense staining after 8 weeks of exposure.

Implications:

  • This study is the first to report IOL staining associated with systemic methylene blue administration.
