Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Neurosurgery
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Cervical polyaxial screws are crucial for spinal stabilization.
  • Screw loosening or impaction can complicate removal after cervical spine surgery.
  • Standard extraction techniques may be insufficient for severely impacted screws.

Observation:

  • A novel, straightforward technique for retrieving impacted cervical polyaxial screws is described.
  • This method addresses challenges encountered when screws cannot be easily extracted using conventional tools.

Findings:

  • The presented solution offers a reliable approach to overcoming extraction difficulties.
  • Successful retrieval of previously unextractable cervical polyaxial screws is demonstrated.

Implications:

  • This technique may improve patient outcomes by simplifying post-operative procedures.
  • It offers a valuable addition to the armamentarium for spinal surgeons.
  • Potential to reduce operative time and morbidity associated with difficult screw removal.
