  • Adolescents with chronic pain often experience challenges in social development, affecting their self-perception and peer interactions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the psychosocial impact of chronic pain on adolescent social development.
  • To examine how pain intensity, disability, distress, and family/peer factors influence social development in adolescents.

Main Methods:

  • A clinical sample of 110 adolescents with chronic pain (mean 4-year history) completed self-report measures.
  • Utilized the Bath Adolescent Pain Questionnaire's development subscale to assess perceived social development relative to peers.
  • Employed factor analysis and regression analysis to identify key factors and relationships.

Main Results:

  • Over 50% of adolescents felt less developed than peers in at least four areas of social development.
  • Three social development factors emerged: independence, emotional adjustment, and identity formation.
  • Pain intensity negatively affected all factors; peer support positively influenced them. Disability, anxiety, family dysfunction, and depressive mood also showed negative associations.

Conclusions:

  • Adolescents with chronic pain perceive themselves as less socially developed compared to their peers.
  • Pain intensity exacerbates negative self-perceptions of social development.
  • Strong peer relationships appear to play a protective role, fostering more positive social comparisons.
