Summary

Cochlear implantation (CI) can significantly improve hearing and speech perception in prelingually deafened adults who received early auditory-verbal/oral communication training. These individuals can achieve good outcomes and integrate well into society.

  • All participants used hearing aids (HA) before age two and received auditory-verbal/oral training.
  • Data collected included preoperative/postoperative hearing levels, speech perception scores, and rehabilitation history.

    • Significant improvements in pure-tone hearing thresholds were observed post-CI.
    • Speech perception, measured by the Japanese video speech discrimination score (SDS), also showed marked improvement.
    • All patients successfully integrated CI into their daily lives, actively participating in society.

    Conclusions:

    • Cochlear implantation (CI) can yield considerable benefits for prelingually deafened adults with a history of auditory-verbal/oral training.
    • CI candidacy for prelingually deafened adults should be carefully considered, not automatically excluded.
    • Successful outcomes are associated with consistent auditory-verbal/oral habilitation and well-fitted hearing aids prior to implantation.
