No randomized controlled trials were found for interventions with learning disabled sex offenders. Clinical practice currently relies on evidence from studies on sex offenders without learning disabilities or non-randomized trials.

Background:

Sex offender management is a significant public safety concern.
Cognitive behavioral interventions are increasingly used globally for sex offenders.
Modified programs exist for sex offenders with learning disabilities, but their effectiveness is unknown.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy of interventions for learning disabled sex offenders.

Main Methods:

Comprehensive literature search of major databases (Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Biological Abstracts) up to September 2006.
Inclusion criteria focused on randomized controlled trials comparing interventions for learning disabled sex offenders against control groups or alternative interventions.
Data extraction was performed independently by reviewers.

Main Results:

The systematic search identified no randomized controlled trials meeting the selection criteria.

Conclusions:

There is a lack of high-quality randomized controlled trial evidence to support interventions for learning disabled sex offenders.
Clinical decisions are currently based on extrapolated data from studies on sex offenders without learning disabilities or on non-randomized evidence.
Urgent need for rigorous randomized controlled trials in this population is highlighted.
