Summary

Pregnancy-related liver disorders like HELLP and AFLP are common and serious. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for successful management and improved outcomes.

Area of Science:

Background:

  • Pregnancy-associated liver conditions are distinct and occur at specific gestational ages.
  • These disorders pose risks for both maternal and fetal health.

Observation:

  • Common pregnancy liver diseases include hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP), preeclampsia, HELLP syndrome, and acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP).
  • These conditions can lead to significant maternal and fetal complications.

Findings:

  • While challenging to manage, these liver disorders typically resolve spontaneously postpartum.
