Migrant farmworkers face significant mental health challenges. Social isolation and poor working conditions are key stressors linked to anxiety and depression in this vulnerable population.
Area of Science:
- Rural health
- Occupational health
- Mental health disparities
Background:
- The Latino population in rural U.S. areas is growing.
- Factors impacting the mental health of this demographic are not well understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify stressors in farmwork and the farmworker lifestyle that negatively affect mental health.
- To analyze the relationship between specific stressors and mental health outcomes in migrant farmworkers.
Main Methods:
- A sample of 125 male migrant farmworkers completed interviews.
- The Migrant Farmworker Stress Inventory (MFWSI) and mental health scales (anxiety, depression, alcohol abuse) were used.
- Factor analysis and regression models identified stressor domains and their associations with mental health.
Main Results:
- 38% of participants reported significant stress.
- Key stressor domains identified: legality/logistics, social isolation, work conditions, family, and substance abuse by others.
- Prevalence of mental health issues: 18.4% anxiety, 41.6% depression, 37.6% alcohol abuse indicators.
- Social isolation and working conditions were significantly associated with anxiety and depression.
Conclusions:
- Social isolation and difficult working conditions are major stressors affecting farmworker mental health.
- Identifying specific stressors is crucial for developing targeted interventions and support programs for immigrant farmworkers.
