Topical imiquimod cream achieved complete remission of a recurrent pyogenic granuloma on a patient's hand. This treatment offers a promising, effective alternative for managing challenging pyogenic granuloma cases.
Area of Science:
- Dermatology
- Oncology
Background:
- Pyogenic granuloma is a benign vascular proliferation that can recur after treatment.
- Recurrent pyogenic granulomas pose a clinical challenge, often requiring multiple treatment modalities.
Observation:
- An 82-year-old male presented with a recurrent pyogenic granuloma on his right hand despite two prior electrocautery treatments.
- The lesion demonstrated rapid recurrence following electrocautery interventions.
Findings:
- Topical application of imiquimod 5% cream, applied twice daily under occlusion for 3 weeks, resulted in complete lesion remission.
- The patient tolerated the treatment well, experiencing only localized erythema without systemic side-effects.
Implications:
- Topical imiquimod represents a potentially effective and well-tolerated therapeutic option for recurrent pyogenic granulomas.
- This case highlights the utility of imiquimod in managing difficult-to-treat cutaneous vascular lesions.
