Imaging Studies II: Ultrasonography

IntroductionUltrasonography, or renal ultrasound, is a noninvasive medical imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and surrounding tissues.Indications for Urinary System UltrasonographyUrinary system ultrasonography is indicated in various clinical scenarios, such as:Kidney Stones (Urolithiasis): To detect and monitor the size and presence of kidney or urinary tract stones.Hydronephrosis: To assess the dilation of the renal pelvis and...

Imaging Studies for Cardiovascular System II:Types of Echocardiography

Echocardiography plays a role in assessing cardiac health and detecting heart conditions, with various types providing critical insights for diagnosis and treatment.
Types of Echocardiography
Transthoracic Echocardiography (TTE)
TTE is the most common type of echocardiogram which involves placing a transducer on the patient's chest, emitting sound waves to create heart images. TTE is invaluable for evaluating the heart's size, structure, and motion, making it particularly useful for diagnosing...

Imaging Studies VII: Vascular Imaging

DefinitionRenal angiography, also known as renal arteriography, is an imaging technique used to obtain a comprehensive view of blood flow and the vascular structure of blood vessels in the kidneys and surrounding areas.PurposeRenal angiography detects blood vessel abnormalities in the kidneys, such as aneurysms, stenosis, thrombosis, vascular tumors, and renal artery stenosis. It evaluates kidney function and guides interventional treatments like angioplasty or stent placement.Pre-Procedure...

Imaging Studies for Cardiovascular System V: CT

Cardiac computed tomography (CT) scanning is an advanced cardiac imaging technique that utilizes CT technology, with or without intravenous (IV) contrast, to produce accurate cross-sectional virtual slices of specific areas of the heart, coronary circulation, and major blood vessels such as the aorta, pulmonary veins, and arteries. The computer processes these slices to generate three-dimensional images. Multidetector CT (MDCT) is a rapid form of CT scanning that captures multiple slices...

Imaging Studies III: Computed Tomography

DefinitionComputed Tomography (CT) of the genitourinary (GU) tract is a non-invasive imaging modality that utilizes X-rays and computer processing to generate detailed cross-sectional images of the urinary system, encompassing the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and adjacent structures such as the adrenal glands.PurposeCT scans of the GU tract serve several diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, including:Diagnosis of Urinary Tract Diseases: Detects kidney stones, tumors, cysts, and congenital...
Ultrasonography01:17

Ultrasonography

Ultrasonography is an imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize the body's internal structures. It is a non-invasive and safe procedure that does not involve the use of ionizing radiation, making it widely used in various medical fields. Ultrasonography is used to study heart function, blood flow in the neck or extremities, certain conditions such as gallbladder disease, and fetal growth and development.
During an ultrasonography procedure, a handheld device called a...

Summary

Contrast infusion sonography (CIS) is as accurate as hysterosalpingogram (HSG) for confirming Essure placement. This in-office ultrasound test offers a more comfortable and convenient alternative for patients.

Area of Science:

  • Gynecology
  • Reproductive Medicine
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Essure is a permanent sterilization device requiring confirmation of placement.
  • Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is the traditional method for post-placement confirmation.
  • There is a need for convenient and comfortable in-office confirmation tests.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the accuracy of contrast infusion sonography (CIS) with hysterosalpingogram (HSG).
  • To evaluate CIS as a 3-month confirmation test after Essure placement.
  • To assess patient preference and comfort for in-office testing.

Main Methods:

  • A pilot study was conducted with 17 women who had successful bilateral Essure placement.
  • Contrast infusion sonography (CIS) was performed, immediately followed by hysterosalpingogram (HSG).
  • Tests were conducted between 1 and 12 weeks after Essure placement.

Main Results:

  • CIS accurately identified microinsert location and assessed tubal patency, comparable to HSG.
  • Tubal occlusion was confirmed by both methods in 82% of patients by 12 weeks.
  • Patients preferred the in-office CIS procedure over traditional HSG.

Conclusions:

  • Contrast infusion sonography (CIS) is a safe, accurate, and convenient alternative to HSG for post-Essure confirmation.
  • In-office ultrasound testing offers improved patient comfort and preference.
  • A high rate of tubal occlusion was observed early after Essure placement.
