Area of Science:

  • General Surgery
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Surgical Complications

Background:

  • Laparoscopic surgery is a common surgical approach.
  • Splenic rupture is a rare but potentially fatal complication.
  • Delayed presentation of splenic rupture can occur post-laparoscopy.

Observation:

  • A 52-year-old woman with a history of abdominal surgery and acute pelvic infection developed delayed splenic rupture 5 days after laparoscopy.
  • The rupture was associated with a subcapsular hematoma.
  • Potential causes include overlooked Veress needle injury or traction on splenic adhesions.

Findings:

  • Delayed splenic rupture following laparoscopy is a critical surgical complication.
  • Subcapsular splenic hematoma can lead to rupture days after the procedure.

  • Diagnosis requires vigilance for severe pain, hemodynamic compromise, or falling hemoglobin levels.
  • Implications:

    • Clinicians must maintain a high index of suspicion for delayed splenic rupture in the postoperative period.
    • Prompt diagnosis and management are essential to improve patient outcomes.
    • This case highlights the importance of careful surgical technique and thorough postoperative monitoring in laparoscopic procedures.
