    Area of Science:

    • Materials Science
    • Optoelectronics
    • Polymer Chemistry

    Background:

    • Optical waveguides are crucial components in photonic integrated circuits.
    • Developing waveguides with low loss and high environmental stability is essential for reliable device performance.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To fabricate and characterize buried channel optical waveguides using fluorinated polyimides.
    • To evaluate the optical performance and environmental resistance of these waveguides.

    Main Methods:

    • Buried channel optical waveguides were fabricated from fluorinated polyimides.
    • Optical loss was measured for TE and TM polarizations at 1.3 µm wavelength.
    • Heat and moisture resistance were tested through thermal treatment and humidity exposure.

    Main Results:

    • The waveguides operated in single mode with low optical loss (<0.3 dB/cm for TE, <0.7 dB/cm for TM).
    • Optical loss remained stable after heating at 380°C for 1 hour.
    • Optical loss showed minimal change after exposure to 85% relative humidity at 85°C for over 200 hours.

    Conclusions:

    • Fluorinated polyimides are suitable materials for fabricating robust optical waveguides.
    • The fabricated waveguides exhibit excellent optical properties and high resistance to heat and moisture.
    • These findings suggest potential for these waveguides in demanding photonic applications.
