Infertility in Males01:23

Infertility in Males

Male infertility affects millions of couples worldwide, arising from various factors that impact different stages of the reproductive process. An endocrine imbalance resulting from conditions like hypogonadism, Klinefelter syndrome, or pituitary disorders can disrupt hormone levels and reduce sperm production. Testicular defects, such as tumors, cryptorchidism, atrophic testes, abnormal sperm morphology, and low sperm count or motility, may arise due to genetic factors, structural...
Spermatogenesis01:41

Spermatogenesis

Spermatogenesis is the process by which haploid sperm cells are produced in the male testes. It starts with stem cells located close to the outer rim of seminiferous tubules. These spermatogonial stem cells divide asymmetrically to give rise to additional stem cells (meaning that these structures “self-renew”), as well as sperm progenitors, called spermatocytes. Importantly, this method of asymmetric mitotic division maintains a population of spermatogonial stem cells in the male reproductive...
Sex-linked Disorders01:43

Sex-linked Disorders

Like autosomes, sex chromosomes contain a variety of genes necessary for normal body function. When a mutation in one of these genes results in biological deficits, the disorder is considered sex-linked.

Summary

This study reports the first male case of MURCS (Müllerian-duct aplasia, renal agenesis, and cervical somite dysplasia) association with Klippel-Feil anomaly and azoospermia. Testicular sperm extraction was successfully performed.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Medicine
  • Clinical Genetics
  • Developmental Biology

Background:

  • Klippel-Feil anomaly involves fused cervical vertebrae, causing a short neck and limited head movement.
  • MURCS association (Müllerian-duct aplasia, renal agenesis, cervical somite dysplasia) is typically observed in females.
  • A hypothesized male analog of MURCS involves azoospermia, spinal segmentation defects, and renal anomalies.

Observation:

  • A male patient presented with azoospermia and Klippel-Feil anomaly.
  • This presentation aligns with the hypothesized male analog of MURCS.
  • The patient underwent testicular sperm extraction.

Findings:

  • This case represents the first documented instance of MURCS association in a male.
  • The findings support the existence of a male analog to the MURCS association.
  • Successful sperm retrieval was achieved via testicular sperm extraction.

Implications:

  • This case expands the understanding of MURCS association beyond females.
  • It highlights the potential genetic and developmental links between Klippel-Feil anomaly, azoospermia, and renal issues in males.
  • Further research may clarify the genetic basis and diagnostic criteria for male MURCS analog.
