Ultrasonography01:17

Ultrasonography

Ultrasonography is an imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize the body's internal structures. It is a non-invasive and safe procedure that does not involve the use of ionizing radiation, making it widely used in various medical fields. Ultrasonography is used to study heart function, blood flow in the neck or extremities, certain conditions such as gallbladder disease, and fetal growth and development.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Medical Imaging
  • Computer-Assisted Surgery

Background:

  • Echo surgetics is a versatile freehand 3D ultrasound method for minimally invasive computer-assisted orthopaedic procedures.
  • It acquires 3D bone surface and point data transcutaneously, overcoming conventional digitizer access issues.
  • Implemented technologies include Echo Point, Echo Matching, and Echo Morphing.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Evaluate the accuracy of Echo Point for anterior pelvic plane digitization in total hip arthroplasty.
  • Assess the accuracy of Echo Morphing for distal femur reconstruction in minimally invasive knee surgery.

Main Methods:

  • Cadaver experiments were conducted.
  • Accuracy of Echo Point for anterior pelvic plane digitization was assessed.
  • Accuracy of Echo Morphing for distal femur reconstruction was evaluated.

Main Results:

  • Echo Point significantly improved results over conventional digitization (p < 0.001), reducing mean tilt errors from over 20 degrees.
  • Echo Morphing achieved an average accuracy of approximately 1 mm with ~1000 points and 5-10 mm/degrees initial attitude error.

Conclusions:

  • Echo Point offers superior accuracy for pelvic digitization in total hip arthroplasty.
  • Echo Morphing provides clinically sufficient accuracy for distal femur reconstruction in minimally invasive knee surgery.
