Summary

Peripheral pulmonary lipomas are extremely rare, with only eight cases previously reported. This case highlights the second instance of a peripheral pulmonary lipoma in a female patient, emphasizing their rarity.

Background:

  • Lipomas, typically benign neoplasms, rarely occur in visceral organs.
  • Pulmonary lipomas are uncommon, with most found in endobronchial locations.
  • Peripherally located pulmonary lipomas are exceptionally rare, with limited documented cases.

Observation:

  • A 38-year-old female presented with an incidentally discovered solitary pulmonary nodule.
  • Computed tomography revealed a 1.5 cm soft tissue mass in the superior segment of the right lower lobe.
  • The lesion was characterized histopathologically as a well-circumscribed mass of mature adipose tissue.

Findings:

  • The resected lesion was diagnosed as a peripheral pulmonary lipoma.
  • This represents the second reported case of a peripheral pulmonary lipoma in a female patient.

  • Radiological imaging has limitations in definitively characterizing solitary pulmonary nodules.

    • Implications:

    • Intrapulmonary lipomas should be considered in the differential diagnosis of solitary pulmonary nodules.
