Summary

Platelet activation increases at night in asthma patients, correlating with lower peak expiratory flow. This nighttime platelet activation is not linked to plasma catecholamines or reversed by atropine, suggesting parasympathetic nerves aren't responsible.

  • Studied five asthma patients and five normal subjects over 24 hours.
  • Measured platelet activation using the ratio of beta-thromboglobulin to platelet factor 4.
