Summary

This case study highlights the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients treated with atypical antipsychotics like olanzapine and risperidone. Alternative neuroleptics may be safer for patients with a history of VTE.

  • The shared 5HT2 receptor antagonism of olanzapine and risperidone may be implicated in this adverse event.

Implications:

  • Patients with a history of VTE while on 5HT2 receptor-antagonist antipsychotics should consider alternatives like amisulpride.
  • Close monitoring for early VTE detection and prompt treatment is crucial for patients on these medications.
