Summary

Feline visceral hemangiosarcoma (HSA) is often multifocal and aggressive, leading to a poor prognosis for cats. Early diagnosis and treatment options for this rare cancer remain limited.

Background:

Feline visceral hemangiosarcoma (HSA) is an uncommon cancer in cats.
Clinical progression and outcomes for feline visceral HSA are poorly documented.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the clinical characteristics, diagnostic findings, and outcomes of feline visceral HSA.
To provide insights into the prognosis and treatment of this rare feline tumor.

Main Methods:

Retrospective review of medical records from 26 cats with visceral HSA.
Multi-institutional data collection and analysis.

Main Results:

Common signs include lethargy, anorexia, respiratory distress, and collapse.
Anemia (82%) and elevated aspartate transaminase (53%) were frequent findings.

Metastasis to the lungs occurred in 33% of cases; HSA was often multifocal (77%) and located in the liver, intestines, or lymph nodes.

Median survival time for treated cats was 77 days.

Conclusions:

Feline visceral HSA is typically diagnosed as a multifocal disease.
The prognosis for cats with visceral HSA is poor, with limited chemotherapy use.
Further research is needed to improve outcomes for affected cats.
