The need for belonging is a fundamental human driver.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore nursing students' experiences of belongingness during clinical placements.
To investigate the relationship between belongingness and clinical learning.
To propose a new perspective on clinical learning through the "lens of belongingness".

Main Methods:

Qualitative phase of a mixed-methods study.
Semi-structured interviews with 18 nursing students.
Participants from Australia and the United Kingdom.

Main Results:

A dominant theme was the strong belief that belonging is a prerequisite for clinical learning.
Student perspectives revealed how belongingness influenced their overall placement experience.
The findings underscore the critical role of social connection in skill development.

Conclusions:

Reconceptualizing clinical learning through a "lens of belongingness" offers novel insights.
