[Anti-ischemic heart protection using thiamine and nicotinamide]

The effect of vitamins B1 and PP on the realization of ischemic damage to the heart was studied. It was shown that preliminary single thiamine administration produces a marked cytoprotective effect presumably due to diminution of the intensity of alterative stress which plays and important role in the pathogenesis of ischemic damage to the heart. Repeated use of nicotinamide for several days also protects the myocardium from anoxic damage to a great measure. The protective effect of vitamin PP is presumably explained by stimulation of the stress limiting system as the result of adaptation by mild pharmacological stresses.
