Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes of transferring a traumatized index finger to reconstruct a lost thumb.
  • To assess functional recovery, strength, and sensation after index finger transfer for thumb reconstruction.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of seven patients undergoing pedicled index finger transfer for thumb amputation.
  • Postoperative assessment included range of motion, pinch and grasp strength, sensation, and patient-rated appearance.
  • Vascular patency of the transferred digit and remaining thumb structures was evaluated pre-operatively.

Main Results:

  • All transferred index fingers survived without complications.
  • An average follow-up of 4 years showed excellent functional recovery, including opposition and pinch.
  • Patients reported satisfactory aesthetic and functional outcomes.

  • Index finger transfer is an effective adjunct for traumatic thumb amputations.
  • The procedure can restore opposition and protective sensation.
