[Endothelin in arterial hypertension].

    Summary

Plasma endothelin (ET) levels were significantly elevated in patients with arterial hypertension and heart failure compared to healthy individuals. Orthostatic load further increased ET in some hypertension patients, correlating with angiotensin-2 levels.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiovascular Medicine
    • Endocrinology
    • Nephrology

    Background:

    • Endothelin (ET) is a potent vasoconstrictor peptide.
    • Elevated ET levels are implicated in cardiovascular diseases.
    • Understanding ET's role in hypertension and heart failure is crucial.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To measure plasma ET concentrations in patients with arterial hypertension (AH) and heart failure (HF).
    • To compare ET levels between these patient groups and healthy volunteers.
    • To investigate the effect of orthostatic load on ET in essential hypertension.

    Main Methods:

    • Plasma samples were collected from patients with AH, HF, and healthy controls.
    • Endothelin (ET) concentrations were quantified using a specified assay.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Orthostatic load was applied to a subgroup of patients with essential hypertension, stage II B.
  • Main Results:

    • Healthy volunteers had ET levels ranging from 4.0-8.6 pg/ml.
    • Patients with AH showed ET levels from 5.7 to 64.5 pg/ml.
    • Patients with HF exhibited ET levels from 8.8 to 94.0 pg/ml.
    • A trend of increased ET was observed in essential hypertension patients under orthostatic load, linked to higher angiotensin-2.

    Conclusions:

    • Plasma ET concentrations are significantly higher in patients with AH and HF than in healthy individuals.
    • ET may play a role in the pathophysiology of AH and HF.
    • Orthostatic stress might exacerbate ET elevation in certain hypertensive patients.
