Summary

Individuals with common variable immunodeficiency (CVI) have an increased risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). These lymphomas share features with childhood immunodeficiency-associated lymphomas but may be more differentiated and occur in adults.

Background:

  • The link between immunodeficiency and cancer is well-documented.
  • Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVI) is characterized by low immunoglobulins and impaired antibody production.
  • Previous studies reported 13 cancers in 11 CVI patients, including 7 non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the histologic, immunologic, cytogenetic, and clinical features of NHL in CVI patients.
  • To compare NHL in CVI with lymphomas seen in other childhood immunodeficiency syndromes.
  • To understand the characteristics and prognosis of NHL in CVI.

Main Methods:

  • Histologic, immunologic, and cytogenetic analysis of 8 previously identified NHL cases and 3 new lymphoma cases in CVI patients.

    • Early-stage NHL in CVI patients generally has a favorable prognosis.
    • Further cytogenetic studies are required to determine the frequency and significance of chromosomal abnormalities in CVI-associated lymphomas.
