Summary

This study shows 23-gauge transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy is effective for posterior segment diseases. The surgical technique resulted in improved visual acuity with rare complications.

Background:

Vitrectomy is a common surgical procedure for various posterior segment conditions.
Minimally invasive techniques aim to reduce operative complications and improve patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the outcomes of patients treated with 23-gauge transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy.
Assessing the efficacy and safety of this minimally invasive approach for diverse posterior segment diseases.

Main Methods:

Retrospective chart review of 81 consecutive 23-gauge vitrectomy cases.
Surgery performed using a two-step 23-gauge system.
Minimum 3-month follow-up for all patients.

Main Results:

Significant improvement in visual acuity from 20/150 preoperatively to 20/70 postoperatively (P < 0.0001).
Mean postoperative intraocular pressure was 14 mmHg.
Low complication rate, including one intraoperative retinal tear; no endophthalmitis or retinal detachment.

Conclusions:

23-gauge transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy is an effective treatment for vitreoretinal diseases.
The technique demonstrates a favorable safety profile with rare complications compared to traditional methods.
