Summary

Laparoscopic radical nephrectomy offers excellent long-term outcomes for most kidney cancers, matching open surgery results with less morbidity. Experienced surgeons can now manage more complex cases laparoscopically.

Background:

Laparoscopic radical nephrectomy is increasingly preferred for kidney cancer.
Nephron-sparing surgery is gaining importance, even with a healthy contralateral kidney.
Focus is shifting to laparoscopic management of advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC) stages.

Purpose of the Study:

Review long-term outcomes of laparoscopic radical nephrectomy.
Highlight recent advancements in laparoscopic radical nephrectomy techniques and indications.

Main Methods:

Review of recent literature on laparoscopic radical nephrectomy.
Retrospective comparative studies of laparoscopic versus open radical nephrectomy.

Main Results:

Laparoscopic radical nephrectomy demonstrates excellent long-term oncologic control.
No significant differences in 5-year cancer-specific or overall survival compared to open surgery.
Surgeons are expanding the application of laparoscopic techniques for complex RCC.

Conclusions:

Laparoscopic radical nephrectomy is superior to open surgery for most kidney cancers.
Offers equivalent oncologic outcomes, reduced morbidity, and faster recovery.
Advanced RCC pathologies can be safely managed laparoscopically by experienced surgeons.
