Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the incidence of AAA in a screened population.
  • To identify key risk factors for AAA development.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective, population-based study involving free ultrasound screening for AAA.
  • Subjects completed medical history surveys, including AAA risk factors.
  • Incidence rates and comparative analyses were performed on 979 patients.

Main Results:

  • AAA was detected in 2.8% of the screened population (27 patients).
  • AAA occurred exclusively in males over 60 years old (4% incidence).
  • Predominant risk factors included smoking (85%) and hypercholesterolemia (70%), with a 6% incidence in male smokers over 60 with hypercholesterolemia.

Conclusions:

  • Age, male sex, smoking history, and hypercholesterolemia are predominant risk factors for AAA.
  • Screening identifies significant AAA prevalence in specific high-risk demographics.
  • These factors are critical for targeted AAA screening programs.
