Background:

  • Behcet's disease can affect the autonomic nervous system, detectable via electrodermal activity, heart rate variability, and pupillometry.
  • Loss of habituation, a form of implicit learning, can signify pathological changes in synaptic regions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate functional decreases in synaptic effectiveness (habituation) of sympathetic neuron pathways in Behcet's disease patients.
  • To assess habituation of sympathetic pathways following repeated activation.

Main Methods:

  • The study included 12 Behcet's disease patients and 12 healthy controls.
  • Sympathetic skin potential (SSP) was recorded under controlled conditions (Faraday cage, room temperature).
  • Sixteen electrical stimuli (1200 ms duration, 5 mA strength) were applied to elicit SSP responses.

Main Results:

  • Initial SSP amplitudes were significantly lower in Behcet's patients compared to controls (P<0.001).
  • Patients showed no significant difference in SSP amplitudes after the 13th stimulus, while controls showed no significant difference after the 9th stimulus.
  • The habituation rate of SSP was significantly slower in Behcet's patients than in controls (P<0.001).

Conclusions:

  • Behcet's disease is characterized by delayed habituation of sympathetic skin potentials.
  • This delayed habituation may stem from peripheral nerve pathologies associated with vasculitis in Behcet's disease.
