Summary

Cellulite in women accelerates skin aging, with altered skin properties appearing earlier in those with cellulite compared to controls. Early intervention may prevent premature skin aging associated with cellulite.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize cellulite in women across different age groups.
  • To determine if cellulite influences skin aging.

Main Methods:

  • Non-invasive techniques were used on 94 healthy females across three age groups (21-30, 31-40, 51-60) and two cellulite grades (grade 2 and grade 0/control).
  • Quantified cellulite's 'orange peel appearance' by measuring shadowed surfaces.
  • Assessed biomechanical properties (extensibility, retractability, elasticity), skin thickness via ultrasound, dermis echogenicity, and density.

Main Results:

  • Cellulite (grade 2) showed age-dependent changes in shadowed surface characteristics, becoming smaller and more numerous after age 30.
  • Total skin and hypodermis thickness increased by approximately 30% in the cellulite group compared to controls, regardless of age.
  • Biomechanical properties and dermis echogenicity were significantly altered earlier (from age 30) in the cellulite group compared to the control group (from age 50).

Conclusions:

  • Women with cellulite exhibit earlier signs of skin aging than those without.
  • Two distinct cellulite sub-populations were identified: under 30 with large dimples and normal properties, and over 30 with smaller dimples and altered dermis.
  • Preventing premature skin aging associated with cellulite is recommended.
