Orbital hydatid cysts are rare in Western countries but common in North Africa. Prompt diagnosis and surgical removal are crucial for managing this rare orbital pathology.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Parasitology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Orbital hydatid cysts, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, are uncommon in Western regions.
  • They are more prevalent in North African countries and urban areas with immigrant populations.

Observation:

  • A 72-year-old male presented with left exophthalmia, decreased visual acuity, and ocular pain.
  • CT and ultrasound revealed a homogeneous, unilocular, cystic retro-ocular mass.
  • Positive hydatid serologic tests confirmed the parasitic etiology.

Findings:

  • Surgical enucleation of the orbital cyst was performed successfully after irrigation with hypertonic saline.
  • Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of an orbital hydatid cyst.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Orbital hydatid cysts require consideration in differential diagnoses of intra-orbital cystic lesions, especially in endemic areas.
  • Complete enucleation and avoidance of cyst rupture are essential to prevent recurrence and complications.
