Summary

Ondansetron is a highly effective anti-emetic, outperforming metoclopramide for acute emesis and showing minimal toxicity, which is a significant benefit for cancer patients, especially children. Patient preference is a key factor in evaluating anti-emetic treatments.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Chemotherapy and radiotherapy often cause severe nausea and vomiting.
  • Effective anti-emetic management is crucial for patient tolerance of cancer treatments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review new studies on ondansetron.
  • To evaluate the clinical performance of ondansetron in a large patient database.

Main Methods:

  • Review of new studies on ondansetron.
  • Analysis of a clinical database exceeding 5,500 cancer patients.
  • Inclusion of paediatric patient data.

Main Results:

  • Ondansetron demonstrated superior efficacy compared to metoclopramide in treating acute emesis.
  • Results for delayed emesis were less consistent, with mixed outcomes in cisplatin studies.
  • Ondansetron exhibited minimal toxicity, notably lacking acute dystonic effects, a key advantage for young patients.

Conclusions:

  • Ondansetron is a highly effective anti-emetic with a favorable safety profile.
  • Patient preference for anti-emetics is a critical consideration in treatment evaluation.
  • Ondansetron offers significant benefits, particularly in managing chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV).
