    Summary

Thymomas commonly cause erythroblastopenia, but can also affect other blood cell types. This review highlights rare cases of erythroblastopenia-hypogammaglobulinemia and polycythemia linked to thymoma.

    Area of Science:

    • Hematology
    • Oncology
    • Immunology

    Background:

    • Thymomas are tumors of the thymus gland.
    • Hematologic abnormalities are known complications of thymomas.
    • Erythroblastopenia is the most frequent hematologic manifestation.

    Observation:

    • Two cases of thymoma with unusual hematologic findings are presented.
    • Case 1: Erythroblastopenia-hypogammaglobulinemia.
    • Case 2: Polycythemia.

    Findings:

    • Thymomas can present with diverse and complex hematologic issues beyond erythroblastopenia.
    • The association between thymoma and polycythemia is particularly rare.
    • Hypogammaglobulinemia in conjunction with erythroblastopenia suggests broader immune system involvement.

    Implications:

    • Recognition of these rare hematologic manifestations is crucial for timely diagnosis and management of thymoma.
    • Further research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms linking thymomas to diverse blood disorders.
    • This review underscores the importance of a comprehensive hematologic evaluation in patients with thymoma.
