Summary

The kaolin particle film protectant Surround deterred blueberry maggot (Rhagoletis mendax) females from visiting treated blueberries and reduced their walking behavior. Field applications showed fewer egg-laying scars on Surround-treated blueberries.

Area of Science:

  • Agricultural Entomology
  • Behavioral Ecology
  • Pest Management

Background:

  • The blueberry maggot (Rhagoletis mendax) is a significant pest of highbush blueberries (Vaccinium spp.).
  • Effective and environmentally conscious pest control methods are crucial for sustainable agriculture.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of Surround (kaolin), a particle film protectant, on the behavior of female blueberry maggot.
  • To assess the efficacy of Surround in reducing oviposition by Rhagoletis mendax on blueberries.

Main Methods:

  • Behavioral assays (two-choice and no-choice) were conducted using Surround-treated and untreated blueberries.
  • Fruit visitation, walking, cleaning, and oviposition behaviors were quantified.
  • Chromameter measurements assessed changes in blueberry skin color.
  • Field trials evaluated oviposition scars on treated and untreated blueberries.

Main Results:

  • Female blueberry maggots showed a preference for untreated blueberries in two-choice assays.
  • Walking behavior (bouts and duration) was significantly reduced on Surround-treated fruit.
  • Surround treatment significantly altered blueberry skin color (lightness, hue, saturation).
  • Field applications of Surround resulted in fewer oviposition scars, especially with weekly applications.

Conclusions:

  • Surround acts as a deterrent to blueberry maggot females, affecting their fruit selection and locomotion.
  • The particle film alters fruit surface properties, potentially reducing host plant acceptance.
  • Weekly applications of Surround show promise for managing blueberry maggot populations by reducing oviposition.
