Area of Science:

  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Surgical Technology
  • Gastrointestinal Surgery

Background:

  • Laparoscopic appendectomy is gaining popularity among general surgeons and gynecologists.
  • Advancements in surgical technology aim to simplify minimally invasive procedures.
  • The MULTI-FIRE ENDO GIA 30 is a new automatic laparoscopic stapling system.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the technique of laparoscopic appendectomy using the MULTI-FIRE ENDO GIA 30 stapler.
  • To compare this new technique with previous laparoscopic methods.
  • To assess the safety, ease, and speed of the stapling system.

Main Methods:

  • Ten patients underwent laparoscopic appendectomy using the MULTI-FIRE ENDO GIA 30.
  • The stapler utilizes a 12-mm trocar for staple placement and simultaneous cutting.
  • Comparison was made with prior laparoscopic appendectomy techniques.

Main Results:

  • Operating time for laparoscopic appendectomy was reduced from an average of 30 minutes to as low as 5 minutes.
  • No intraperitoneal leakage of appendiceal contents was observed.
  • Easier appendix removal with minimal mesoappendix dissection was noted due to the larger trocar.

Conclusions:

  • The MULTI-FIRE ENDO GIA 30 stapler offers a safe, easy, and rapid method for laparoscopic appendectomy.
  • This technology simplifies the procedure and reduces operative time.
  • Preliminary experience indicates no immediate or late complications.
