Cancer Prevention

Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer.

Summary

Two new flavonoids, fenzhimines A and B, were isolated from Rubus biflorus Buch (Fenzhimei). Their chemical structures were determined using spectroscopic techniques and chromatography.

Area of Science:

  • Natural Product Chemistry
  • Phytochemistry
  • Organic Chemistry

Background:

  • Rubus biflorus Buch, known as Fenzhimei, is a plant with potential medicinal properties.
  • Investigating the chemical constituents of medicinal plants is crucial for discovering new bioactive compounds.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and characterize the chemical constituents of Rubus biflorus Buch.
  • To identify novel flavonoid compounds from this plant species.

Main Methods:

  • Silica gel column chromatography was employed for the isolation of compounds.
  • Spectroscopic techniques (e.g., NMR, Mass Spectrometry) were used for structure determination.

Main Results:

  • Two new flavonoid compounds, designated fenzhimines A and B, were successfully isolated.
