University-based veterinary teaching hospitals are critical for education and clinical care but face increasing financial and operational pressures.
Internal and external factors necessitate significant changes for these institutions to remain viable and effective.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify key challenges confronting veterinary teaching hospitals.
To propose actionable strategies for institutional and collective improvement.

Main Methods:

Convened a task force comprising representatives from the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges and the American Association of Veterinary Clinicians.
Analyzed primary issues impacting hospital operations and financial health.

Main Results:

Identified critical issues including faculty and staff shortages, case load management, fiscal strategy needs, and stakeholder expectation management.
The majority of proposed solutions are intended for individual college implementation.

Conclusions:

Collective strategies emphasize increasing the number of veterinary specialists.
Improving the recruitment and retention of faculty and staff is a key collective goal for the future sustainability of these hospitals.
