Disorders of the Male Reproductive System01:20

Disorders of the Male Reproductive System

Men's health issues are increasingly recognized as significant, with several conditions posing common threats. Among these, testicular cancer is especially prevalent in younger men, particularly those aged 20 to 35 years. The disease often manifests as a painless mass in the testicles, sometimes accompanied by a sensation of heaviness or a dull ache.
Prostate disorders are another major concern. These conditions can impair urinary flow due to the prostate's location around the urethra. Symptoms...
Microbiota of the Urogenital Tract01:28

Microbiota of the Urogenital Tract

The human urogenital system, once thought to be sterile in healthy individuals, is now recognized as a complex microbial habitat. Advancements in molecular sequencing techniques have revealed that even in healthy adults, the kidneys and bladder harbor microbial populations similar to those found in the distal urethra, albeit in much lower abundance. These resident microorganisms, while generally innocuous, can become opportunistic pathogens under conditions that alter the urogenital...
Urinary Tract Infection II: Pathophysiology01:25

Urinary Tract Infection II: Pathophysiology

The pathophysiology of urinary tract infections (UTIs) encompasses several progressive stages, beginning with bacterial colonization and culminating in potential systemic complications if untreated. UTIs are primarily initiated by bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, which often originate from the gastrointestinal tract and migrate to the urinary system through the periurethral area. This migration can occur via several routes, including improper hygiene practices, sexual activity, or...
Acute Pyelonephritis I: Introduction01:27

Acute Pyelonephritis I: Introduction

Pyelonephritis is a bacterial infection that primarily affects the renal parenchyma and collecting system, including the renal pelvis, tubules, and interstitial tissue of one or both kidneys. It can be classified as either acute—a sudden, severe infection—or chronic, which refers to long-term or recurrent kidney infections. The primary cause of acute pyelonephritis (APN) is bacterial infection, with Escherichia coli accounting for approximately 70-80% of cases. Other bacteria, such as Proteus,...
Amebiasis01:28

Amebiasis

Entamoeba histolytica, a protozoan parasite, is responsible for intestinal and extraintestinal amebiasis. Though a significant proportion of infections remain asymptomatic, approximately 50 million individuals annually are estimated to present with clinical disease, resulting in up to 100,000 deaths globally. The disease burden is disproportionately high in regions with lower socioeconomic status, such as parts of India, Africa, Mexico, and Latin America.Etiology and TransmissionThe infective...
Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

    Summary

Physician-diagnosed prostatitis, an inflammation of the prostate, is linked to a higher risk of developing benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and related urinary issues later in life.

    Area of Science:

    • Urology
    • Epidemiology
    • Men's Health

    Background:

    • Prostatitis is a common condition affecting men.
    • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a frequent age-related condition causing lower urinary tract symptoms.
    • The relationship between prostatitis and subsequent BPH development requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between physician-diagnosed prostatitis and the subsequent development of BPH-associated events.
    • To analyze the risk of BPH, enlarged prostate, prostatism, and acute urinary retention following a prostatitis diagnosis.

    Main Methods:

    • A longitudinal, population-based study of 2447 men in Olmsted County, Minnesota.
    • Review of medical records for prostatitis diagnosis and subsequent BPH-related diagnoses and treatments.
    • Calculation of odds ratios to determine the strength of association.

    Main Results:

    • Physician-diagnosed prostatitis showed a 2.44-fold increased odds of later diagnosis of prostatism, enlarged prostate, or BPH.
    • A 1.69-fold increased odds of requiring BPH treatment was observed in men with prior prostatitis.
    • No significant association was found with acute urinary retention.

    Conclusions:

    • Physician-diagnosed prostatitis is associated with an increased risk of developing BPH-associated events.
    • Prostatitis may serve as an early indicator or risk factor for future prostatic and urologic problems.
    • These findings highlight the importance of monitoring men with a history of prostatitis for BPH development.
