Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the diagnostic performance of CTC with electronic colonic cleansing (ECC) compared to standard CTC.
  • To evaluate the impact of ECC on the sensitivity and specificity of polyp detection.
  • To determine if ECC software offers a benefit in tagged CTC datasets.

Main Methods:

  • Two blinded readers evaluated CTC datasets from 79 patients with 153 confirmed colorectal polyps.
  • Cases were randomized and read with and without ECC software.
  • Per-polyp sensitivity, per-polyp/per-patient specificity, and reading times were calculated.

Main Results:

  • Per-polyp sensitivity for polyps >6 mm increased from 60.4% without ECC to 73.6% with ECC.
  • Sensitivity for polyps >10 mm improved from 58.3% to 83.3% with ECC.
  • Per-patient specificity also showed improvement, rising from 75% to 81.5% with ECC.

Conclusions:

  • Electronic colonic cleansing software enhances the sensitivity of CT colonography for detecting clinically relevant colorectal polyps.
  • ECC improves the overall diagnostic accuracy of CTC.
  • This technology shows promise for improving colorectal cancer screening outcomes.
