Summary

This study investigated pest controllers and found no evidence that occupational insecticide exposure increases the risk of developing Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS). Neuropsychological tests were largely normal, and serious health issues were not reported.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between occupational insecticide exposure and the development of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) in pest controllers.
  • To assess health outcomes, including chemical sensitivity, in a cohort of professional pest controllers.

Main Methods:

  • A sample of 45 pest controllers underwent physical and laboratory examinations, including urine screening for pyrethroid metabolites.
  • Psychiatric interviews, neuropsychological testing, and a chemical sensitivity questionnaire were administered.
  • Urine analysis detected various pyrethroid metabolites, with some exceeding reference ranges.

Main Results:

  • No persistent or serious work-related health problems or chemical sensitivity were reported by the pest controllers.
  • While some pyrethroid metabolites were detected in urine, and increased liver enzymes and psychiatric disorders were noted in a portion of the sample, neuropsychological test results were generally normal.
  • 38% of participants had psychiatric disorders, and specific pyrethroid metabolites were detected at varying frequencies.

Conclusions:

  • The findings do not support the hypothesis that work-related insecticide exposure leads to the development of chemical sensitivity.
  • The study suggests that occupational exposure to insecticides in pest controllers may not be a significant risk factor for MCS.
  • Further research may be needed to explore other potential contributing factors to MCS.
