Awareness and attitudes toward epilepsy are limited in Southern Brazil. Higher education correlates with better understanding and less stigma, but gaps in basic knowledge persist, highlighting the need for public education campaigns.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Public Health
- Social Science
Background:
- Epilepsy awareness and attitudes significantly impact patient well-being and social integration.
- Understanding public perception is crucial for developing effective health interventions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the level of awareness and attitudes towards epilepsy among the population of Southern Brazil.
- To identify differences in knowledge and perceptions based on educational background.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional study was conducted using a questionnaire administered to 832 inhabitants of Caxias do Sul.
- Participants were categorized into three groups based on their educational level: non-university students, junior university students, and senior/graduate university students.
Main Results:
- University students and graduates demonstrated greater knowledge of epilepsy causes and treatments compared to non-university students.
- Individuals with higher education reported more positive attitudes towards people with epilepsy.
- Despite better knowledge, a significant portion of the educated group still lacked fundamental information about epilepsy.
Conclusions:
- A notable deficit in epilepsy-related information exists within the Brazilian population studied.
- Targeted public health education campaigns are recommended to address misconceptions and improve understanding of epilepsy.
