Osteochondroma, a benign bone tumor, rarely occurs in the head and neck. This study describes the first reported case of osteochondroma in the styloid process and its successful surgical removal.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Oncology
  • Head and Neck Surgery

Background:

  • Osteochondroma is a common benign skeletal tumor, typically found near long bone epiphyses.
  • Incidence in the head and neck region, particularly the jaw, is rare (0.6% of all osteochondromas).
  • Osteochondromas protruding into the oral cavity are exceptionally uncommon.

Observation:

  • A rare case of osteochondroma originating from the styloid process is presented.
  • This represents the first reported instance of primary osteochondroma in the styloid process.
  • The tumor protruded into the oral cavity, posing a diagnostic and surgical challenge.

Findings:

  • Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of osteochondroma.
  • Surgical excision was performed for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Complete removal of the styloid process osteochondroma was achieved.
  • Implications:

    • This case expands the known anatomical locations for osteochondroma.
    • Highlights the importance of considering rare presentations in head and neck pathology.
    • Provides a surgical case study for managing styloid process osteochondromas.
