Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.   • A sample of 1,502 Omani schoolboys from eight randomly selected urban schools participated.
  • Screening utilized the Conners' Teacher Rating Scale (short version) and other valid measures.

  • 7.8% of the Omani schoolboys screened showed signs of hyperactivity.
  • Hyperactivity strongly correlated with conduct disorder, poor academic performance, and behavioral issues like aggression.
  • Sociodemographic factors (child's rank, siblings, parental education) were not significant predictors.

Conclusions:

  • This study provides one of the first prevalence quantifications of hyperactivity in the Arabian Gulf.
  • The identified prevalence suggests hyperactivity is an emerging global health challenge.
