Summary

Background:

Stump appendicitis is a rare complication following appendectomy, characterized by inflammation of the residual appendiceal stump.
Diagnosis can be challenging due to non-specific symptoms and a history of prior surgery, often leading to delayed recognition.

Observation:

A 28-year-old female presented with right lower quadrant abdominal pain and fever, 15 months after a laparoscopic appendectomy.
Imaging studies, including abdominal ultrasonography and CT scan, revealed an inflamed appendiceal stump.

Findings:

The patient underwent a laparoscopic stump appendectomy.
Histopathological examination of the resected stump confirmed the diagnosis of stump appendicitis.

Implications:

This case underscores the necessity of including stump appendicitis in the differential diagnosis for patients experiencing recurrent abdominal pain after appendectomy.
Early recognition and surgical intervention are crucial for managing stump appendicitis effectively.
This report represents the first documented case of stump appendicitis in Korea, contributing to the global understanding of this rare condition.
