Obesity01:24

Obesity

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from a person's weight and height, used to categorize individuals into weight ranges. It is calculated using the formula: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Obesity is a health condition characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue that poses health risks, often diagnosed with a BMI ≥ 30. This excess fat storage occurs when surplus dietary calories are converted into triglycerides and stored in adipocytes...

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention II

The person's health status fluctuates continually, varying from being in good health to becoming ill and returning to being healthy. To understand the concept of illness prevention, there are two models. First, the health-illness continuum model is a graphic representation of an individual's wellness. It states that a person is considered healthy in the absence of physical disease and the presence of good emotional health.
The agent-host-environment model states that disease results from...

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention I

A model is a theoretical way to understand a concept or an idea. Models can overcome barriers to health regardless of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. In addition, models make the task easier by providing different ways to approach complex issues. There are two major health promotion models: the health belief model and the health promotion model.
The health belief model (HBM) attempts to predict health-related behavior in specific belief patterns. According to the HBM, a person's...

Levels of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention

Health promotion allows a person to control the determinants of health, resulting in an improved health status. It enhances the quality of life and reduces premature deaths. Health promotion and illness prevention programs help people make beneficial choices to reduce the risk of disease and disabilities. There are three health promotion and illness prevention levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.
In primary prevention, actions taken before disease onset prevent the disease from...
Cancer Prevention02:59

Cancer Prevention

Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer.
Some...
Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.
Foundations of Community Mental Health Programs
Central to the success of community-based interventions is the...

Summary

School-based programs show mixed results for preventing childhood overweight and obesity. While some interventions improved body mass index (BMI) and behaviors, more high-quality studies are needed to confirm effectiveness.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Pediatrics
  • Behavioral Science

Background:

  • Childhood overweight and obesity are significant public health concerns.
  • School-based interventions are a common strategy for prevention.
  • Evidence on the effectiveness of these programs is still developing.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review the effectiveness of school-based programs in reducing childhood overweight or obesity.
  • To identify characteristics of effective interventions.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of experimental or quasi-experimental studies published since 1990.
  • Inclusion criteria: school-based, preventive, evaluation ≥6 months, reported overweight outcomes.
  • Searched for interventions focusing on nutrition, physical activity, or both.

Main Results:

  • Fourteen studies were identified, with most (n=10) having weak evidence.
  • One study showed strong evidence for reducing overweight odds in girls.
  • Four studies reported significant improvements in BMI or overweight prevalence; 12 improved dietary intake, physical activity, or sedentary behavior.

Conclusions:

  • Limited ability to draw strong conclusions due to few studies and methodological concerns.
  • Social learning programs may suit girls; environmental interventions may suit boys.
  • Future programs require high-quality evaluation protocols.
